Known for its cotton, alfalfa and dairy farms in the 1880s, Laveen has grown to become a modern, urban village. Today, it is placed just eight miles to the southwest of downtown Phoenix. It is located between South Mountain, the Gila River and the Salt River.
Because of the Salt River, the early farmers were relatively isolated from the Salt River. Over the years, it has been the site of agricultural farms and rural developments. In the 1950s, the Laveen Cowbelles created a community barbecue for local residents. Now, the annual barbecue is hosted at the Corona Ranch. It draws in vendors from across the state. Residents can watch pot-belly pig racing and country music shows. The barbecue also hosts events like a cow milking competition.
While it may have been rural originally, residents now have a number of Laveen property management options. The construction of bridges on the Salt River made it possible for Laveen residents to reach Phoenix. The Arlington Estates development started in 2000. Before long, it was followed by other developments that transformed the rural area. To temper the growth, organizations have encouraged developers to build open spaces, rural elements and equestrian trails throughout the community.
For recreational options, residents can check out the the Southern Ridge Golf Course and the Aguila Golf Course. Top restaurants in the town include Kabob Express, the Red Dragon Express and Mandy's Fish & Chips. For the area's best pizza, check out Barro's Pizza on West Baseline Road.
